I approached Katherine Bowman to make a gold ring to replace a special gold ring I had lost. I also wanted the ring to mark a transition in my life as a mother - my three daughters were growing up and that intense, physical phase of early motherhood was finished. On top of that, I had just completed my fourth book about the Motunui Epa, five incredible panels carved by my ancestors in Taranaki in the 1700s. Katherine and I met at her studio in Kyneton and this was an enjoyable part of the process. Katherine listened and responded with great creativity and sensitivity to my needs and the result is a stunning pair of rings (a silver model and a gold one) that I wear every day. Many people have commented on these rings and I treasure not just the objects themselves but the beautiful experience of co-creating the rings with an artist like Katherine.
